“I firmly condemn the shelling of the Turkish village of Akçakale by Syrian forces yesterday. I express my condolences to the families of the victims and my solidarity with the Turkish government and the Turkish people. I urge the Syrian authorities once again to put an immediate end to violence, to refrain from any attempt to spread the conflict across the borders and to strictly abide by their obligations under international law.”

Edmond Panariti, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Albania and Chairman of the Committee of Ministers, presented to the Parliamentary Assembly, the developments during his country’s Chairmanship since the previous Assembly session last June. Recalling that under the motto “unity in diversity,” Albania’s  Chairmanship is focusing, among other priorities, on promoting sustainable democratic societies, Mr Panariti referred to the “2012 Exchange on the religious dimension of intercultural dialogue” that took place in Dürres in early September. He stressed the importance and usefulness of such exchanges in the current context of rising intolerance.

Minister of Foreign Affairs and Chairman of the Committee of Ministers, Mr. Edmond Panariti, welcomed the first free and pluralistic elections held in Libya, on 7 July 2012, after five decades of dictatorship. In particular, he praised the maturity of the voters and the calm atmosphere in which the electoral process was conducted.

In the framework of the Albanian Presidency of the Council of Europe and the Year of Janusz Korczak, the Polish Jewish whose principles on dignity and children’s rights are in the core of the Convent on Children’s Rights- adopted by the UN General Assembly in 1989, the Ministry of Labor, Social Affairs and Equal Opportunities in collaboration with the CoE, the Polish Embassy in Tirana, UNICEF and the Albanian Children Foundation organized the Regional Conference on Children’s Rights in Tirana.
